FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is really known about your honey? What effects do you claim?

All general effects of honey, and specifically anti-bacterial protection.

Why would we use honey with so many products on the market?

Because, there is not a good product that gives anti-bacterial protection and, at the same time, stimulates wound healing.

There are anti-bacterial products/dressings. What does honey add?

Special about honey is the “slow release” antibacterial effect. Without having the wound healing process stopped or reduced (like with silver, sulfadiazine, betadine etc.).

Which bacteria are most sensitive to honey?

Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Enterococcus and Bacillus species.

Is honey effective against fungi?

Various honey types may kill and/or slows development of several Candida and Saccharomyces species. Many bacteria die at low honey concentrations, for fungi higher concentrations are required.

Why is Revamil honey better than other?

The honey in Revamil has a very high enzyme level. The honey in Revamil has a reproducable quality because it is produced under controlled conditions. Therefore it complies with quality requirements necessary for wound management. The honey in Revamil does not contain chemical residues. Every batch is controlled and checked on these standards.

Are there residues in your honey?

No, every batch is tested on this.

Is honey more expensive than existing products?

Revamil honey is highly effective functional product, produced under strict quality standards, and is on the basis of price very cost effective or comparable to other products.

Why would I apply honey to a wound in granulation phase?

If a wound is in a good granulating stage, it is not necessary to apply honey to the wound. In the stage prior to this stage it can help stimulate the granulation.

Do you advise to apply honey to a heavily infected wound?

Results have shown that application of honey on heavily infected wounds, for example with pseudomonas, leads to control of the infection within several weeks.

For which type of wound should I use honey, and in which phase?

Especially for wounds in black and yellow phase, not on heavily exudating wounds. For heavily exudating wounds, honey in combination with an absorbing dressing (alginate) can be used.

Honey is for burn wounds, right? Not for chronic wounds?

The usage of honey on burn wounds is well known. But because of the anti-bacterial activity and possible presence of anti-oxydants, honey is also very suitable for other acute wounds, and for chronic wounds.

What does honey do in a chronic wound?

A chronic wound has actually stopped progressing in the inflammatory phase. The wound produces more oxygen radicals than is good for it. Honey may play a role in scevenging the oxygen radicals and reducing the production of these. In the humid wound environment, the healing process can continue.

How much honey should I use?

Spread a thin layer of several millimeters over the entire wound.

With what should I cover the honey

More or less any type of (semi-occlusive) dressing, that you are used to work with.

Using honey, is it not going to become a “mess”? Does it leak?

The honey can be applied directly on the wound, or first on a dressing. If you use Revamil wound dressing, you can easily apply the dressing to the wound. Because of body temperature, honey flows in the wound and spreads out. It must be covered.

How do I apply Revamil gel?

Depends on the wound. For an undeep (shallow) wound, you can apply the wound on a dressing before the dressing is added to the wound. For deep wounds, the Revamil can be applied directly out of the tube.

I heard that honey can give a burning sensation on a wound? How long does the pain last?

The strong hydrophylic activity and/or pH of honey can lead to burning sensation/pain (max 20% of patients). Although unpleasant, it shows that honey is working. It can last several minutes to half hour. Moisten the wound before application may reduce the pain.

What are experiences with Revamil?

Case studies are carried out in several hospitals in Europe. Case studies with diabetic feet show positive experiences. Several burn wound patients are also treated with good results.

People with pollen allergies, are they also allergic to your honey?

Not necessarily. A test was carried out which showed that only a very low percentage of people with pollen allergy is also allergic to honey.

Can you use honey on wound of diabetic patients (honey=sugar)

Research showed that the blood glucose level of diabetic patients does not increase by applying honey to a wound.

Which compounds are responsible for anti-bacterial effect? What causes the slow-release effect? Hydrogen peroxide is toxic? What does the low pH do? How much sugar is there in honey?

Continuously a small amount of honey is diluted with wound fluid, which leads to activation of some enzyme that produces low amounts of hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide concentrations are so low that it cannot damage tissue cells Some bacteria cannot survive in acidic environment, such as Staphylococcus. There is 80% to 85% sugar in honey.

How does honey remove wound odour?

Wound odour is caused by compounds produced by fast growing bacteria, often sulphuric compounds. Honey kills wound bateria, so that the wound odour is reduced.

Can the enzymes in honey withstand sterilisation (gamma-irradiation)?

The enzyme activity is slightly reduced, but not much. Revamil honey guarantees active enzymes. The anti-bacterial activity is not affected.

Which compounds cause the debridement?

This is not entirely clear, but hydrogen peroxide can stimulate the production of proteases. Proteases disolve proteins, so that nectrotic tissue is dissolved.

Can my patient treat himself with honey products for skin care or wound healing?

With good instructions for use (added to the products), this is not a problem. Honey is completely safe.

How long is Revamil active?

Because of the “slow release” process and the long enzyme activity, Revamil has a long antibacterial effect. Tests have shown that Revamil optimal activity starts to reduce after 24 hours, with activity until at least 48 hours. Best is to replace it after 24 hours, but changes after 48 hours is also possible without harm.

Are there any restrictions for how long time, you can use Revamil wound care products on your skin?

Revamil wound care products can be used without interruption for 30 days. After these thirty days, the period of usage should be interrupted for a short period of time. Revamil Hand and Hand Wash do not have a time restriction.

Almond oil and shea butter have been added to help protect the skin against dehydration.
Revamil Hand Wash is a mild cleansing fluid with honey. Revamil Hand Wash contains soft, non-alkaline soaps that will not irritate the sensitive and vulnerable skin. This produces a softening and caring cleansing fluid with a low pH value which enhances the natural resistance of the skin.
